Las Vegas, June 29 — UFC 317 delivered fireworks and history Saturday night, with undefeated sensation Ilia Topuria winning the vacant UFC Lightweight Championship with a devastating first-round knockout of former champion Charles Oliveira, and Alexandre Pantoja retaining his Flyweight title with another clinical submission win. The event also served as a breakthrough night for Myanmar’s emerging star Joshua Van, who won an exciting fight and earned a title chance in front of a raucous audience.
LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE: Topuria Fulfills His Promise
Topuria, at 16-0, went up from featherweight and quickly established himself in the lightweight division. Facing a seasoned finisher in Charles Oliveira, the 28-year-old Spaniard promised a first-round knockout and delivered on it.
Despite Oliveira’s early grappling efforts and size advantage, Topuria remained composed, reversing a ground exchange, and unleashing a massive right hook followed by a left that knocked the Brazilian to the canvas at 2:27 in Round 1.
Topuria said, “I represent the new generation of mixed martial arts. This is the next level of the game. I did exactly what we had planned: jab, jab, right hand, left hook, and boom, his lights were out. Whoever is ready for me, I am here. If he (Paddy Pimblett) will sign the contract, I am here.”

With the win, Topuria becomes a two-division champion, having previously held the featherweight belt, and instantly puts the lightweight division on notice.
FLYWEIGHT TITLE: Pantoja Submits Kara-France for Fourth Defense

Alexandre Pantoja continues to build his legacy at 125 pounds, submitting New Zealand’s Kai Kara-France in the third round to successfully defend his flyweight belt for the fourth time.
The champion dictated the pace with relentless back takes and pressure. Kara-France did well to survive early attempts but couldn’t escape the inevitable. Pantoja locked in a rear-naked choke at 1:55 of Round 3.
Pantoja said, “It feels good. I love to make this show for everybody. Are you entertained now?! A lot of guys know I go to that position (back take), a lot of guys train for that, but I still evolve. That’s my fourth title defense. I think I deserve a better ranking in the Pound-for-Pound.”
Joshua Van was brought into the Octagon and confirmed as the next title challenger for Pantoja’s belt. Van said,
“He’s a great champion, but he’s never fought Joshua Van,”
Pantoja responded by saying
“He’s a humble guy, he deserves to fight for the title next,”
UFC President Dana White said,
“(Joshua Van) is the number one contender and I’d just said the winner gets the title shot. Obviously it’s the fight to make right now. The reaction (was excellent) that it got from the fans tonight. We’ll have to see how it plays out.”
ASIA RISING: Joshua Van Wins Fight of the Night in Thriller Against Royval
In what could be a Fight of the Year contender, Myanmar’s Joshua Van continued his rise by defeating former top contender Brandon Royval in a high-paced, action-packed three-round war.
Van dominated the first round with crisp boxing, while Royval surged in the second with a wild barrage. The third round saw both break personal and promotional striking records. Van’s output surpassed 100 significant strikes for the sixth consecutive fight, setting a UFC record.
“I broke my toe before the fight but I couldn’t feel it. We knew Royval was a tough guy, we knew we were here for a war. Even so, I wanted to get the finish. Like the Diaz brothers say: you never lose a fight, you just run out of time. Me and my team know what we’ve got, now it’s time to show the world. You guys, was that Fight of the Night?! The winner of the title fight tonight, they’re going to have to see me.” Van said.
