Kathmandu. Australia clinched a decisive six-wicket victory over India in the fifth Test at Sydney to wrap up a 3-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series win, confirming their place in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025. The defending champions will face South Africa at Lord’s from June 11 to June 15 in a contest to determine the best Test cricket team in the world.
In a spectacular display, Australia’s pacer Scott Boland dismantled India’s batting lineup with figures of six for 45, leaving the visitors with little room to fight back on the third day. Chasing a modest target of 162, openers Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja laid a strong foundation before debutant Beau Webster (39*) and Travis Head (34*) guided the hosts to victory.
The win propels Australia to second place in the WTC standings with 63.73 percentage points, firmly out of reach of third-placed India (50.00) and fourth-placed Sri Lanka (45.45). South Africa had already secured their spot in the final after defeating Pakistan in Centurion last week.
Australia’s skipper Pat Cummins celebrated the series win and emphasized the importance of qualifying for the WTC Final:
“To hold the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is an amazing feeling, and securing our spot in the World Test Championship Final adds an extra layer of excitement. We’ve worked hard for this, and defending our title at Lord’s is a challenge we’re looking forward to.”
Cummins praised the tournament’s structure, highlighting its role in encouraging consistency across different conditions over two years:
“It’s a great tournament that rewards consistent performance. Playing against diverse teams in varying conditions makes it special, and we can’t wait to be part of it again.”
The WTC Final promises to be a cricketing spectacle, with Australia aiming to defend their 2023 title and South Africa striving for their first ICC silverware in over 25 years.
The showdown at Lord’s will not only celebrate the longest format of the game but also culminate two years of intense Test competition among the world’s top teams.
The final months of the WTC cycle still hold importance for teams aiming to consolidate their standings:January 17 & 25: Pakistan vs. West Indies, Multan and January 29 & February 6: Sri Lanka vs. Australia, Galle
Australia’s qualification underscores the prestige of the World Test Championship, which has revitalized Test cricket by adding context and competition to the traditional format. The road to Lord’s 2025 is set, and cricket fans worldwide are counting down to witness history in the making.
