12 September 2024. Australia’s tour of England in 2024 began with a tough 28-run win in the first Twenty20 International, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Australia’s batters took full advantage of their opportunity to bat first after England won the toss and elected to bowl first at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on Wednesday.

Australia’s opener Travis Head was in scintillating form, smashing 59 runs off just 23 balls, including 30 runs in a single over against Sam Curran. Head’s blistering knock featured three fours and three sixes in Curran’s fifth over, tying the Australian men’s record for most runs in a T20I over. Head joined an elite group, matching the likes of Ricky Ponting, Daniel Christian, and Mitch Marsh. His partnership with fellow opener Matt Short (41) set the tone, adding 86 for the opening wicket within the Powerplay.

Though Australia looked set for a total exceeding 200, England’s Liam Livingstone applied the brakes, taking 3 wickets for just 22 runs. Australia eventually posted a strong 179-run total.
England’s reply never gained momentum, as Australia’s bowlers dominated from the start. Josh Hazlewood (2/32) was effective with the new ball, while Adam Zampa (2/20) and Sean Abbott (3/28) stifled the middle order, bowling England out for 151. Despite a promising bowling performance, the hosts were unable to chase the target.

Travis Head was named Player of the Match for his explosive 59, as Australia took the upper hand in the series. The teams will meet again in Cardiff for the second T20I on Friday.
