5 September 2024. The nominees for the prestigious 2024 Ballon d’Or awards have been revealed, with the ceremony scheduled to take place on Monday, 28 October, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. This marks the 68th edition of the Ballon d’Or, the football world’s most celebrated accolade.
The event will crown the best footballers across eight categories, with football icons Didier Drogba and Sandy Heribert hosting the ceremony. This year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony follows a new collaboration between UEFA and Groupe Amaury, the parent company of France Football and L’Équipe, which began co-organising the event in 2024.
The Ballon d’Or, established in 1956 by France Football, is awarded annually to footballers for their exceptional performance and impact on the sport. The 2024 awards will feature several categories, including the Men’s and Women’s Ballon d’Or, Kopa Trophy (for the best under-21 player), Yashin Trophy (for the best goalkeeper), and the Gerd Müller Trophy (top scorer of the previous season). Notably, two new awards have been added: Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year, to acknowledge the vital role coaches play in achieving success on the pitch.
Among the 30 nominees for the Men’s Ballon d’Or are standout players such as Erling Haaland (Manchester City), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Kylian Mbappé (Paris Saint-Germain), and Vinícius Júnior (Real Madrid). In the Women’s Ballon d’Or category, players like Aitana Bonmatí (Barcelona), Alexia Putellas (Barcelona), and Lauren James (Chelsea) headline the list.
The Yashin Trophy nominees include elite goalkeepers such as Emiliano Martínez (Aston Villa), Gianluigi Donnarumma (Paris Saint-Germain), and Mike Maignan (Milan). The men’s and women’s club of the year will also be awarded, with teams like Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Olympique Lyonnais in contention.
