September 3, 2024 – Hong Kong cruised to a commanding 9-wicket victory over the Maldives in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier clash at the YSD-UKM Cricket Oval, Bangi. After winning the toss, Hong Kong elected to bowl, a decision that set the tone for a one-sided encounter.
The Maldives, batting first, struggled to build a competitive total, managing just 102 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Captain Umar Adam was the standout performer for the Maldives, scoring 26 runs off 15 balls. Gedara Kumara added 21 runs from 25 balls, but the rest of the lineup faltered under Hong Kong’s disciplined bowling attack.
In response, Hong Kong wasted no time in chasing down the target. Opener Jamie Atkinson scored 19 runs off 20 balls, but it was wicketkeeper-batsman Zeeshan Ali who stole the show with an explosive half-century, reaching 50 runs in just 21 balls. Captain Nizakat Khan also played a blistering knock, contributing 35 runs off just 13 balls. Hong Kong reached the target in just 9 overs, showcasing their batting prowess.
Ateeq Iqbal was named Player of the Match for his excellent bowling performance. He bowled 4 overs, conceding just 24 runs, and took 2 crucial wickets, effectively stifling the Maldives’ batting effort.
