24 June, Munich. Hungary defeated Scotland 1-0 and secured a spot in the tournament’s last sixteen. This result condemned the Scots to yet another big tournament defeat. Barnabas Varga stretched off after a horrific collision.
Hungary secured third place in Group A with three points thanks to a breakaway goal by Kevin Csoboth with the final kick of the game, while Scotland ended bottom of the table and have never advanced past the group stage of the World Cup or the Euros.
Before the dramatic conclusion, Hungary’s Varga had a terrifying encounter when he crashed horribly into Scotland’s Angus Gunn, the goalie, and defender Anthony Ralston. Varga was stretchered off the field after appearing to be unconscious and receiving medical attention behind a blanket curtain. Later, he was said to be stable in a Stuttgart hospital and would require cheek surgery.
According to Steve Clarke, Scotland was denied a clear penalty in their sad late loss to Hungary, which sent them out of the group round of Euro 2024.
In Stuttgart, Kevin Csoboth’s breakaway goal dropped Scotland to third place in Group A and ended their dreams of making it to the tournament for the first time.
However, Clarke called the victory in the 100th minute by Csoboth “irrelevant.”. He stated that the “big moment” of the match was the inability to award a penalty when Stuart Armstrong went down in the area during the second half.
