Florian Wirtz’s long-range victory over Angus Gunn gave Germany a commanding early advantage. The excellent Jamal Musiala subsequently increased Germany’s lead, and Kai Havertz scored the penalty kick after Ryan Porteous of Scotland was sent off for a crude lunge on Ilkay Gundogan in the penalty area.
Late in the second half, substitute Niclas Fullkrug scored a fourth goal. Even though Antonio Rudiger’s own goal gave Scotland a late lead, Emre Can’s game-winning kick gave the home team a four-goal lead once again.
Germany’s head coach said: “We were brilliant in the first 20 minutes. We conceded but it’s a good sign that our players complained about conceding.
I was kind of surprised that Scotland wasn’t that aggressive in the first 20 minutes. I think they were surprised by our ball possession; it was very concentrated. They then defended deeper and didn’t high press as they have in the qualifying games at times.”
“Germany were outstanding, we couldn’t match them. Defensively, we weren’t very good and on the ball, we weren’t very good. The first half ran way from us very quickly, we didn’t give ourselves a foothold. Now it’s all about reaction so let’s see how they react. Four points is the target.
