July 9, 2025— Irish football is set to enter a new chapter as the Republic of Ireland prepares to make its historic debut at the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2025™, scheduled to take place from 3 to 27 November in Qatar.
For Ireland U-17 Head Coach Colin O’Brien, the opportunity marks a significant milestone not only in his coaching career but for the entire Irish football community. “This is a proud moment for us,” said O’Brien. “A lot of young fans are going to be watching the matches and following the team closely. We hope this tournament will inspire younger players and encourage them to be a part of our football legacy.”
The tournament, hosted at Qatar’s world-class Aspire Zone complex, will be the first-ever FIFA U-17 World Cup™ to feature 48 teams and will kick off a series of five consecutive editions in Qatar through to 2029. The prestigious venue—renowned for nurturing top-tier athletes—holds sentimental value for O’Brien, who previously led Ireland’s U-15 team at the same location nearly a decade ago.
“As a football coach, it’s always a privilege to play in Qatar,” O’Brien shared. “The quality of the pitches and training grounds is outstanding. These high standards help elevate player performance and preparation.”
The Irish U-17 squad, nicknamed the Young Boys in Green, will face a challenging group stage featuring Paraguay, Uzbekistan, and Panama. Among the exciting talents on the roster is Benfica’s rising star Jaden Umeh, who played a pivotal role in Ireland’s qualification for the tournament.
“This is a huge opportunity for our young players,” O’Brien added. “We’re excited to play against teams from different confederations and showcase Ireland’s homegrown talent on a global stage.”
Beyond football, O’Brien is also looking forward to the cultural aspect of the tournament. “This is the first time for the squad to play in Qatar. We are excited for them to experience the local culture and atmosphere. We hope to foster meaningful connections with teams and fans from around the world.”
The FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025™ promises to deliver a dynamic and festive experience for fans, with 104 matches scheduled over 25 days, all hosted at the Aspire Zone. A lively fan zone will add to the celebratory atmosphere throughout the tournament.
The tournament will open on 3 November with hosts Qatar facing European giants Italy, while the final showdown is set to take place at the iconic Khalifa International Stadium, one of the premier venues of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.
