The report highlights key achievements in 2024, reflecting the federation’s efforts to create a more sustainable and inclusive future for rugby.

The organization has made substantial progress in minimizing its environmental footprint. World Rugby’s first-ever annual carbon footprint was certified by One Carbon World, covering scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. A Sustainable Sourcing Framework was introduced to ensure responsible purchasing decisions, and a landmark climate change impact report was commissioned to analyze the risks and effects on rugby across ten representative nations. Additionally, 36 regional associations and member unions participated in sustainability workshops, while a new travel policy and online booking system were implemented to reduce carbon emissions and enhance staff welfare. To further protect biodiversity, World Rugby launched the “Rugby for Nature” toolkit, encouraging local clubs to safeguard the natural environment. The organization continues to collaborate with the international community as an active signatory to the Sports for Climate Action and Sports for Nature frameworks.

World Rugby has also focused on using the sport as a tool for social impact and inclusion. Ahead of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, 500 female rugby leaders were engaged through 30 grassroots to global forums and masterclasses. Through its partnership with ChildFund Rugby, the organization has raised £1.3 million, benefiting over 76,000 children worldwide. Social initiatives during the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2023 positively impacted 160,000 people. Furthermore, 32 female coaches have received support from the Gallagher High Performance Academy since 2023. Rugby’s global participation is estimated to have generated $8.4 billion in societal value and $1.5 billion in healthcare savings. Looking ahead, the Impact Beyond 2025 legacy program is designed to increase global participation and visibility in women’s rugby.

In governance, World Rugby has been recognized as a leader, securing an A1 ranking in the 2024 Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) governance review. Female representation in leadership has improved significantly, with 38% of the World Rugby Council and 42% of the Executive Board now being women. Two former international rugby players have been added to the Executive Board, ensuring stronger athlete representation in decision-making. Additionally, 80% of all World Rugby member unions now have a sustainability or diversity, and inclusion plan in place.

World Rugby Chair, Dr. Brett Robinson, emphasized the organization’s ambition to drive meaningful change in the sport. He stated that the report is not just a record of progress but a statement of shared ambition to create a sport that thrives today and inspires future generations. He highlighted the strengthening of governance, embedding of social impact initiatives, and tangible progress in addressing rugby’s environmental footprint. While acknowledging existing challenges, he reaffirmed World Rugby’s commitment to being part of the solution.

With the publication of this report, World Rugby reinforces its position as a leader in sports sustainability, demonstrating a strong commitment to building a responsible and inclusive future for rugby.

World Rugby has published its first Sustainability Report, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives.
