Zeng, born in Guangzhou, China, in 1966, grew up in a table tennis loving family. She received table tennis instruction from her mother until the age of nine. She joined China’s national squad at the age of 16. Zeng rose the ranks fast, taking first place in multiple regional competitions and capturing the junior national championship.<\/p>\n

In the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the “two-color” rule was implemented, which destroyed her hopes of competing in the Olympics. The regulation, which mandated that paddles have two distinct colors on each side, had a big effect on Zeng’s strategy because she frequently turned her paddle to trick opponents. Zeng left the sport early because she was unable to adjust.<\/p>\n

Zeng was offered a position as a table tennis coach at a Chilean school in 1989, which transformed her life. Years later, she resumed playing, winning two national events in 2004 and 2005 before quitting to assist her son’s table tennis career.<\/p>\n

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Zeng switched to table tennis to stay fit. “I started playing again more than anything, just to exercise because we weren’t doing anything locked down in the house except eating,” she told CNN in an interview at the time. Her love was renewed, and she began competing in regional events in Chile, with the assistance of the table tennis federation.<\/p>\n

Zhiying Zeng’s journey from a little child in China to a 58-year-old Olympic athlete for Chile exemplifies her undying passion and determination. Her tale has inspired athletes all over the world, illustrating that it is never too late to pursue your aspirations.<\/p>\n

At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Zeng faced Lebanon’s Mariana Sahakian on Saturday. Despite losing, her story remains inspirational.<\/p>\n
