December 17, 2025\u2014Records fell on a remarkable day of run-scoring in Gqeberha as South Africa clinched their three-match women\u2019s ODI series against Ireland with a commanding 74-run victory.<\/p>\n

Batting first, South Africa produced their highest-ever total in women\u2019s 50-over cricket, piling up 375 for six, the 13th-highest score in the history of the format. The total proved beyond Ireland\u2019s reach, even though the visitors also crossed the 300-run mark, achieving the feat for just the fifth time in their ODI history.<\/p>\n

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt led from the front with a superb 124 at the top of the order. She was well supported by Sune Luus, who struck 114, and returning all-rounder Dane van Niekerk, who added a fluent 88. The performance underlined the strength of South Africa\u2019s top order as they took an unassailable 2\u20130 lead in the series.<\/p>\n

Van Niekerk, playing her first ODI series at home in more than four years, credited the batting unit for pushing towards the 400-run mark on a surface that was slower than typical Highveld conditions. She also highlighted Wolvaardt\u2019s leadership and Luus\u2019 all-round contributions with bat, ball and in the field.<\/p>\n

In response, Ireland showed resilience and intent with the bat. Star all-rounder Orla Prendergast narrowly missed a century with an impressive 97, while Amy Hunter contributed 64 as Ireland posted their highest-ever ODI total against South Africa.<\/p>\n

For the hosts, right-arm seamer Leah Jones stood out with three wickets, though South Africa acknowledged there was room for improvement in the bowling department ahead of the series finale in Johannesburg on Friday.<\/p>\n

Ireland captain Gaby Lewis took positives from her side\u2019s performance, pointing to the team\u2019s progress throughout the tour and the fighting spirit shown despite falling short of the target. The match featured more than 680 runs in total, reflecting a high-quality contest and another step forward for women\u2019s cricket.<\/p>\n
